Biocene was born from a vision to solve two pressing environmental challenges: harmful algae blooms and climate change. Our journey began as a passion project in McGill BioDesign, an engineering design club affiliated with McGill University, where a group of bioengineers, inspired by the power of algae, initially explored using it to clean air. While the idea wasn't feasible, it sparked a realization — algae, while beneficial, can cause devastating overgrowth in water bodies.
This realization led to the creation of Biocene and our flagship technology, Algo, an eco-friendly device designed to clean water while transforming collected algae biomass into valuable products. Biocene was founded by a group of undergraduate students with a shared desire to better the world around them. Our mission is simple: harness nature to restore ecosystems and drive a net-zero future.
